UFC 73 – Stacked
July 8, 2007 Arco Arena
THIS one didn’t have the MMA world-shaking upsets of the previous three UFC tournaments or the blank space in my mind of UFC 72 (which I didn’t see) but it sure lived up to its “Stacked” title. Although the main event welterweight championship between Anderson “The Spider” Silva and Nate “The Great” Marquardt was ironically the least exciting of the card.
The Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira-Heath “The Texas Crazy Horse” Herring barnburner is the figurative perfect match to start a martial arts tournament. The legendary heavyweights, picking up from where they left off in Japan’s Pride, exchange punches. Herring falls while Nogueira gets side cradle control and goes for back control but Herring suddenly stands up to escape. On their feet, the Minotaur hits the Horse with a strong left straight that slightly buckles the latter. Later, with about 30 seconds left in the round, Nogueira misses a left straight and Herring counters with a left roundhouse head kick that hurts Nogueira a lot more than he hurt Herring earlier. Nogueira falls to the canvas and Herring follows him to the ground to deliver a pounding.
Inexplicably, Herring disengages, gets back on his feet and motions for Nogueira to do the same. Nogueira does not look a gift horse in the mouth (heh…) and Herring again fells him. With Herring in Nogueira’s guard and punching out Nogueira, the Texas Crazy Horse, true to his moniker, acts crazy and again stands up while motioning with his hands for Nogueira to get back up. Nogueira survives Round 1 with his wits and poise intact. In our scorecard, we give it, of course, to Herring, 10-9.
In Round 2, Nogueira, fully aware that he has to rally, tries several submission holds on Herring, which the strong and patient Herring all escape from. On those failed submission attempts alone, Nogueira wins the round, 10-9.
Herring, in the last round, again does one of his great escapes from Nogueira’s chokes and Kimuras, the most dangerous looking is a rear-naked choke that locks on the lefts side of Herring’s face, Herring bides his time and pulls out of the hold and even manages to reverse into a dominant position while landing on Nogueira’s guard. Herring fights on but is obviously fading, while Nogueira having gone back to boxing Herring, increasingly gets more confident and does enough to win Round 3 to add to his points from Round 2 – no mean feat, considering the dire straits he was on in Round 1. Nogueira, 10-9.
The UFC judges had it officially at 29-28 for Nogueira just like Free-For-All’s. To beat a dead horse (sorry, the pun is irresistible), we have to question Herring’s chivalry, sportsmanship, stupidity, or a combination of all. Although, it’s no big mystery. Even though Herring was on the verge of taking out Nogueira with his striking while the Brazilian was dazed and very vulnerable on the ground, the two previous defeats (a decision and submission by Anaconda choke) he suffered to Nogueira had planted the seeds of fear and respect in his mind. Nogueira can submit anybody anytime when all his resources are locked on predatory mode. Perhaps also flushed with his power, Herring wanted to show the world that he could end the fight on his feet instead of on the ground.
Everyone is welcome to post their opinion on the matter. I used to write a sports column just as long as this one in a local English news daily where I was getting paid a pittance (everything is relative), so you can’t blame this Free-For-Aller for reserving the rest of the card for (no, not three or four days later, as my schedule had it then) next time when I feel like it. Take that, editors of all stripes and egos! No deadlines this time…and no column pay either. Well…c’est la vie.

hello my friend, this is ur NUMERO UNO FAN!!!! I am very happy that ur back doing this and having ur own blog, I changed computers many months ago and didnt have ur site on this new one...I love reading ur columns...
I hear somebody is using the NAME CHADLIONHEART?...well I am the real chadlionheart...my real name is RICHARD SENO TAN, chad is my nickname and LIONHEART is my callsign in Airsoft...I think I have an idea who that person is...but the person using my name has NOTHING on his BALD HEAD... and a stalker...a coward boy...named after a DINOSAUR...
I would also want to say Hi to some friends, like Attorney Rameses Villagonzalo. who if he reads this piece will know who I am talking about...and to the Citom guy outthere who is our contact also and an un-named taxi driver who likes to pummel a bald headed person...HOOOOAAAAA
First, I would like to make my sentiments clear: not all persons not blessed with crowning glory are, as the REAL "chadlionheart" so graphically and so honestly describes, as mean and traitorous as the entity using Richard Seno Tan's airsoft call sign to email me an insult at this site. But, thank you for adding to my sitemeter counter, in a way. It was shiny stat previously.
You didn't have to go to all the trouble, "chadlionheart." It is very childish on your part (as expected) and even you will find it very difficult to top your own traitorous self, backstabbing coward. How can you expect to make the real Chad and I fight? As friends, we are closer to being brothers. You cannot put a wedge between us with your apparent and dumb intrigue. Chad, Sir Ekin, Jonas, and most if not all of the Yaw-yan Cebu Ardigma guys are our friends. I also consider many martial artists from other clubs my friends. The Cebu martial arts community will never be united if "people" like you keep on preventing that from becoming a reality.
You once spent good money, buying stocks in what is now a dead as a door-nail MMA promotion outfit (you will never be Cebu's Dana White), on what you thought was a good investment in local mixed-martial-arts promotion. You took a wash. Let it go. It's only business. You still have more money, wherever that comes from ("Datu gud ko!" You once told Chad's mother.) There are other worthwhile things for you to do and your money to buy. Live and let live. Learn not to bother anyone. You will be happier (at least, less sad) and more fulfilled for it.
If GnP and URCC are doing better than your corporation, so what? Do more, do better to compete fairly! Don't just snipe and bad talk them into bankruptcy.
For the benefit of the general public, although I am averse to washing dirty linen in public, you are better off staying away from this genuinely cowardly impostor. He knows who he is or it. Many others who have been similarly victimized, or at least have unfortunately witnessed the despicable unmanly acts of this yellow-liver creature (you started this name-calling business), knows what Chad and I are referring to.The local martial arts community has been saddled with this entity's arrogance, lies, betrayals, and plain troubling presence. He or it is a pest. Like a mosquito that you want to ignore, this insect will inevitably suck blood from a part of your physical, and at times psychological, body.
He or it is currently being sued for two criminal offenses, both violent and traitorous. He has lots of money. At least he claims it is his money. He looks respectable. But no one really respects him/it. He/it even had the gall to challenge to a fistfight the lawyer of one person suing him. He has attacked and been attacked in reprisal. He has challenged this humble blogger to a fight -- inside the ring for Chuck Liddell's sake! I said yes, even though I knew he/it was only bluffing and that I could more than defend myself with my bare hands and feet against him/it. After I agreed, he/it tried and failed to be appointed part of a group "to regulate" local MMA tournaments, part of his/its aim was to keep fighters below 18 and above 40 (I was 43 at that time) from joining sanctioned MMA competition. He/it was in his/its 30s then. Cowardly, traitorous, manipulative...add choice adjective here.
Maybe he took my blog title too seriously.
After having been unable to post on this blog for months, I had thought he/it had run out of evil steam and schemes. Too much to hope for. Everybody is born in this world for a purpose. He/it was born to lie. Born to brag. Born to cheat. Born to pretend. Born to...It is not too late to change your crooked ways, ahem, brother/sister/pet. You, even you!, can be born again. We are all born to play our roles on God's green earth (or is it blue?). And eventually, we all must die, just like everybody else. But why practice martial arts and/or sports to maintain our health, to learn how to defend ourselves and our loved ones? I refuse to give up on you, Mr. Impostor, sir. If, on the slight chance it is not you but someone else just as cowardly, you too can change for the better. Life is not just pestering other people behind false call signs and names. If you think you are a happy person, be happy. Let others exercise their right to be happy.
That ends the sermon for today. God loves you. Satan hates you. Heaven waits for the just. Hell waits for "Judas not pay." Bisan magsakay pa ka og SUV, battle tank o jeep. Old age and death will get to you, if your countless enemies don't get you first. Who needs enemies? We can try to be friends. If it's too late for that, let's stay away from each other, even in the cyberspace. You know you can't beat Richard Seno Tan in a fair fight. I have grappled/sparred with Chad. I know his strengths, he knows mine. We know each other's weaknesses too. We also know yours.
Consider this fair warning. You stay away. We stay away. Wala na lang tay away, dong. Kapoy na. Wala ta magkabata. Nagkatiguwang ta. Ayaw pagbinata.
Is that fair and logical to you? Comprendo?
Take care of yourself and your
loved ones. God bless you.
That ends the sermon of the mount and the rear-naked choke for today and forever.
Amen.
